Mindfulness is the act of being mindful. To be mindful, one must focus all of ones attention and energy to one thing. Studies have shown that it reduces stress, anxiety, and depression in students as well as raises concentration levels and even test scores. It is a practice that can have life-long benefits.
As I tell my students, one can be mindful doing anything, it doesn't just have to be sitting in a dark room and meditating. Mindfulness can manifest in any absorbing activity: cooking, playing football, singing, or coloring intricate mandalas.
My current schedule allows for 3 Mindfulness sessions a week, for 10 minute increments each. My Grade 2 and 3 students practice mindful coloring by working carefully, slowly, and with thoughtful premeditation.
Sometimes I introduce guided meditation practice for children by utilizing the video Jelly Belly.
I co-presented a two day Positive Education workshop for 120+ colleagues.
Asia Life Magazine recently published an article on how Mindfulness and Positive Education was being used at ISHCMC.
