The Art Room is a dynamic space that I designed. I turned a dark, carpeted former IT lab and book closet into a bright, efficient Art studio. With no experience in architecture, I insisted that the wall between the two rooms be demolished, in order for the sinks and art room to be in the same space, so that the students wouldn't have to go out into the hall to wash their palettes.
I also designed cabinets with fixed but varying shelf heights to accommodate different sized art materials. And I made sure that the existing tables and chairs were cut down, so that they would be at an appropriate height for my young students. A book case, lounging cushions, plants, and a large carpeted area were also introduced into the Art room for the first time, allowing for a comfortable, multi-functual space.
Students have access to the 5 designated class iPads as well as the interactive Promethean Board, both of which are regularly used as learning tools in the Art room.
The resulting room is bright and airy, with clearly designed areas for "dry" work or reading and "messy" or large-scale work.
