Students are formally introduced to Art Concepts in Elementary School, including the Elements of Art. Each new Unit begins with a provocation in which students collaborate and discuss which Concept best describes their new Unit. They might only be told what the material will be that they'll be working with, in which case they need to use their understanding of having worked with the material in previous years and what they were capable of doing.
A group of students are given a set of Concept cards, with a brief description of the concepts Line, Value, Space, Color, Shape, Form and Texture and the translation in Chinese, Korean, German, and French on the back. They discuss which they think is the best match and create a Mind Map to explain their thinking.

Students practice their understanding of Concepts in Art History by studying various artworks and matching the artwork with one or more Concepts. As a group, they collaborate and discuss which Concepts best fits the artwork and discuss their reasoning with the class.
